Common Questions
Traceability, answered plainly
What is lot traceability in manufacturing?
The ability to follow a specific lot or batch in both directions: back to the supplier and raw materials it came from, and forward to every product it became and every customer it reached. It is what turns "we think this is affected" into a defensible list.
What is the difference between forward and backward tracing?
Backward tracing starts from a finished product or a complaint and works back to the inputs and suppliers behind it, which is how you find a root cause. Forward tracing starts from a suspect raw material lot and finds every batch and shipment it reached, which is how you scope a recall. A traceability system needs both.
What is a mock recall?
A rehearsal. You pick a lot as though it were affected, trace it end to end, and produce the records a real event would demand - usually against a time limit. Running one regularly is the only honest way to find out whether your traceability works before you need it to.
Does traceability software make my business FSMA 204 compliant?
No. Compliance is a programme covering your products, suppliers, processes and people, and the obligation stays with you. What software does is keep the lot-level records that programme depends on and make retrieving them fast. Be cautious of any vendor who claims their product makes you compliant on its own.
Why do lot codes matter more than serial numbers here?
A serial number identifies one unit. A lot code identifies everything produced under the same conditions from the same inputs - which is the unit a recall actually operates on. Standards like GS1 exist so that code travels with the product between trading partners rather than being re-invented at each step.
How long does traceability take to set up?
That depends far more on your current record keeping than on the software. Operations already capturing lot identity at receiving and shipping move quickly. Where those points rely on paper or memory, the process work comes first - and no system can shortcut it.
